Making Eden : How Plants Transformed a Barren Planet (9781684570287)

Over 7 billion people depend on plants for healthy, productive, secure lives, but few of us stop to consider the origin of the plant kingdom that turned the world green and made our lives possible. And as the human population continues to escalate, our survival depends on how we treat the plant kingdom and the soils that sustain it. Understanding the evolutionary history of our land floras, the story of how plant life emerged from water and conquered the continents to dominate the planet, is fundamental to our own existence. In Making Eden David Beerling reveals the hidden history of Earth's sun-shot greenery, and considers its future prospects as we farm the planet to feed the world. Describing the early plant pioneers and their close, symbiotic relationship with fungi, he examines the central role plants play in both ecosystems and the regulation of climate. As threats to plant biodiversity mount today, Beerling discusses the resultant implications for food security and climate c...

History at the Limit of World-History (9780231124195)

The past is not just, as has been famously said, another country with foreign customs: it is a contested and colonized terrain. Indigenous histories have been expropriated, eclipsed, sometimes even wholly eradicated, in the service of imperialist aims buttressed by a distinctly Western philosophy of history. Ranajit Guha, perhaps the most influential figure in postcolonial and subaltern studies at work today, offers a critique of such historiography by taking issue with the Hegelian concept of World-history. That concept, he contends, reduces the course of human history to the amoral record of states and empires, great men and clashing civilizations. It renders invisible the quotidian experience of ordinary people and casts off all that came before it into the nether-existence known as "Prehistory." On the Indian subcontinent, Guha believes, this Western way of looking at the past was so successfully insinuated by British colonization that few today can see clearly its ongoin...

The Remembrance of Things Past : On Aby M. Warburg and Walter Benjamin (9783447042994)

The art historian Aby M. Warburg and the philosopher Walter Benjamin are widely respected as two of the most significant cultural theorists of the twentieth century. Their common interests in historiography, the function of collective memory, and the relation of modern society to earlier stages of human social existence, were important examples of the attempt to articulate, analyse and represent the experience of modernity. Drawing on a variety of discourses from aesthetics, art history, anthropology and psychology, they presented an account of modernity and human development that represented an important counter to the optimistic belief in progress prevalent amongst their contemporaries. Rarely, however, have the connections between these two thinkers been explored in depth. This volume consists of an exploration of the intellectual relation between them, considering their varying responses to the question of the meaning of modernity, and above all their common legacy for the present....

In autumn, you could have a fun day out in the woods making leaf mobiles, playing "Creeping Commandos" and baking apples with nuts over a campfire. Bell, Book and Camera : A Critical History of Witches in American Film and Television (1476662525)

The witch, as a cultural archetype, has existed in some form as long as history has been recorded. That narrative reality followed through into American narrative film and eventually television language. In these modern storytelling formats and within that unique culture, the witch took on a new life, changing and growing with both industry development, technological change, and socio-cultural shifts. To understand how the witch changed over 120 years, this book follows the trajectory of the cinematic witch by examining her visual and narrative constructions over time. It looks at the witch, contextualized historically and religiously, as a symbolic representation of womanhood and radical expression. It is both an historical walk through American cinematic history and an analysis of an industry that had definitive, but shifting, boundaries concerning expressions of femininity. From The Wizard of Oz to The Craft and beyond, this book is a focused look at how a powerful and well-loved an...

Janelle Lynch - Barcelona (9781934435687)

Scouring the fallow landscape around the Llobregat river and the Rubí stream near Barcelona with her 8 x 10 camera, Janelle Lynch (born 1969) searches for evidence and omens of nature's life cycles. Her photographs of anthropomorphized trees, walls of litter-strewn vegetation, rocks and disintegrating leaves, all taken during a four-year stay in Barcelona between 2007 and 2011, are informed by three figures whose texts are excerpted in this volume: Roland Barthes, particularly his discussion of mourning in Camera Lucida; Charles Burchfield, whose pantheistic painterly animations of landscape have much inspired Lynch; and Wendell Berry, whose essay on approaching nature with respect and humility helped to further hone her process. Barcelona is also conceived as a homage to Lynch's grandmother, who died in 2008, and to the victims of a devastating flood in the region that occurred in 1962. Product details ...

Today, thousands of activists in hundreds of locales are fighting for their children, their communities, their quality of life, and their health.
